Ann says "Listserv stability, open access, and fully functional. Where and how to ensure all of these?"

Frankly, I see nothing wrong with yahoo groups. I also belong to a 501C that hosts lists, but we do not fit their parameters (health issues unless grandfathered from a previous host). That group bought a server and built a site on list members' annual fees.

I, too, like Yahoo groups for many reasons. While it is a non-academic (private) outfit, I do not think that damages our credibility that much -- if at all. I would like to hear arguments to the contrary, and my "consensus" can be swayed. If it is OUR WILL to move the list to a university service -- fine -- let's do it. But, I'd like to hear _why_, please.

The big advantage to AOL group is that it contains a repository of messages so people can read what has been written. This is possible with other list servs but as far as I know none of the ACA lists (including the BOD) list has this feature. Given the limited time most of us have for taking care of extra features using Yahoo has many advantages.
The disadvantage I see is that for people to have access to the Yahoo archive is they need to set up a Yahoo account which some people may not want to do. I respect that choice. A more private list serv with an archive would be nice but people would still have to have accounts to get to the archive. I assume this might be more acceptable to those who object to Yahoo. I don't have the means for setting that up here at Vanderbilt.

I'm pretty sure Yahoo deletes old posts after awhile and the indexing/search function is weak. It's fine for chat but does not facilitate growing a body of knowledge. There are many superior options. The Discussion Board idea we've been kicking around solves these problems.

I still prefer the PUSH delivery of information (where I do not have to get the info) to the PULL delivery of information (where I have to GET the info). Yahoo catalogs info -- as far as I can tell -- from post 1 to infinity. But, DAN GARON wants to make us a "discussion universe" similar to www.geekvalley.com -- please go see this.

I think we need both push (and many discussions boards let you know something new is up) and the more static forms. The more ways we have to build (dare I say it) community the more likely we are to find one that works. No matter what we choose we have to have individuals who are willing to take a very active role in fostering discussion. People are the key not the tools.

Answer: Dan Garon. We need him on the BOD immediately.

Again, I'll volunteer to maintain a member listserv similar to the BOD's. We have the choice of archived or not.
I'd be the manager, so people would subscribe or drop through me. I'm not willing to moderate it, though.

Geek Valley looks great to me! IMO Push/Pull does not apply. Discussion boards do email notifications when there is a new post, and some can be set to send you the newest message so you don't even have to click the link when it shows up in your email.

GeekValley is an example of where we are headed with the leadership/expertise of DAN GARON. Once he is on BOD, I would like to ask him to give us a "virtual manifesto" of what he sees as keys for ACA's virtual worldwide reach. I think we've scored a major coup in his presence, and defer to his far better judgment.

Have you all seen the Website Revisions thread? Jim Parker suggested http://caucuscare.com/ and it's even cooler than GeekValley!
He also posted this excellent article http://www.mindjack.com/feature/12ocvar.html but it's a little old -- it only accounts for what we've been talking about (listserv, dbs, etc.). I really think Caucus is the next evolutionary step.

Hi everyone:
The Yahoo groups format is working. It helps that there are emails to correspond with the posts.
If Yahoo at some point doesn't serve the listserv needs, then we could look at Delphi Forums, which can be made private.
